I’ve gotten many angry messages about how impractical heels are, how they don’t like how girly and feminine they are etc, my apologies that they’re not to your taste, and if you want more practical genderbends, may I recommend: http://gatherersgarden.tumblr.com/
Honestly, this whole ordeal kind of pisses me off.
Because both of these artists are lovely, talented people.
And some idiots need to learn that there are two different categories of genderbends that exist out there.
Category One: The Pinup. These, like Bot’s femclasses, are created specifically with the intention of being a fun, cute little pinup, and nothing more. Much like the pinups of yore by artists such as Vargas and Elvgren, fandom pinups oftentimes take a “normal” identity or situation (being a nurse, for example, or ironing clothes— or being a mercenary for a shady company bent on world domination) and exaggerate it into a somewhat more sexually-charged version for the sake of aesthetic/erotic appeal. No, a real woman most likely would never find herself in this situation, but no one argues this is unrealistic because realism isn’t the point.
Category Two: The Character as Opposite Gender. This is when the creator does their darnedest to create a genderbended version that is as close to the original character’s original spirit as possible. Whether this comes from “one day Engineer woke up as a woman and therefore is not at all feminine” or “this is Engineer if he had been BORN a woman and therefore she is used to being female, but still a robust and down to earth worker” can sometimes slightly change how genderbending is approached. However, regardless of those variations, this is the sort of genderbend that must take into account practicality, gender roles of the time, etc. (Assuming, of course, that the creator is conscientious enough to care about these sorts of qualities.)
A tentative third category could be genderbending that’s done, most often very tastelessly, for a purely fetishized reason, such as the artist or whoever just wanting to see their favorite character as a quote-unquote “dickgirl”.
But I digress. The only time- ONLY- that people should be getting up in arms about the accuracy and sensibility of dress regarding a genderbend or FemOC is when its abundantly clear that the creator is attempting to pass off a Category One as a Category Two— that is, if they seriously DO expect people to believe that their original character runs around kicking ass in those heels and chestmelons, feel free to POLITELY offer your opinion/”set them straight”.
While I understand the fact that keeping characters practical, sensible, and period-relevant are prime concerns for staying within TF2’s original feel, pinups created only for the purpose of being pinups simply do not apply. Not to mention, no one should be jumping down people’s throats for things like this, it’s highly immature and just not nice.
